A final word for an old friend

It is with great sadness I announce the recent death of
artist and friend Scott Duncan Lidgett at the age of 60 in Hampstead,
London. He first came to Spain in the 1960’s and fell in love with the
warmth of the country and the people. He felt this was a place where he
could paint with freedom and tranquility. Scott finally moved here in 1984
when Competa was a crucible of artists, writers, photographers and poets.
It was an exciting transition when life was full of possibility. During
the twenty year period as a resident of Competa his work evolved from large
abstracts to three dimensional landscape. He was inspired by the mountains
and the beauty of the countryside and there was a mystical quality to his
paintings. Spanning two decades his work was shown throughout europe,
exhibiting in Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, Holland and England.
During the final two years of his life he fought against
cancer but his interest in art never waned.
In June we took a bus to the National Portrait Gallery in
London to see the BP prize 2008 and he was delighted to visit his old
college of St. Martins where he completed his MA. This was where his visual
journey had begun. He hadn’t stepped into the building for 35 years. We
celebrated the day with a bottle of cava and a salute to Spain.
Five years ago Scott and I formed the Life Class in Competa.
A possibility for artists to come together for the pleasure and discipline
of drawing from life. At his request we resume this project. In
September the group will reconvene under the name of The Scott Lidgett Life
Class.
Scott had an eye for beauty. He transmitted this into his
paintings which were extraordinary. His home was full of interesting
objects, mirrors and attention to reflected light and his poetry
profound. His partners and his children are of renowned beauty. He
leaves behind four children, Holly, Arran, Fenton and Noah and his first
grandchild is due in October. The essence of Scott lives on with his
siblings. He will be missed by his many friends in Competa for his wit,
grace and charm.

Una ultima palabra para un viejo
amigo

Es una gran tristeza anunciar la
reciente muerte del artista y amigo Scott Duncan Lidgett a la edad de 60
años en Hampstead, Londres. Scott llego a España por primera vez en los
años 60 y se enamoro de la calidad del país y de sus gentes. Sintió que
este era un lugar en donde él podía pintar con libertad y tranquilidad.
Scott finalmente se vino aquí a Competa en el año 1984 que era y es un
crisol de artistas, escritores, fotógrafos y poetas. Fue una transición
emocionante cuando la vida estaba llena de posibilidades. Durante veinte
años residió en Competa donde desarrollo su trabajo de grandes pinturas
abstractas y paisajismo tridimensional. Inspirado por la belleza del
campo y las montanas que tiño de valor místico sus pinturas. Durante dos
décadas su trabajo fue exhibido en numerosos países Europeos, tales como
España, Francia, Alemania, Dinamarca, Holanda e Inglaterra.
Durante
los dos últimos años de su vida él luchó contra el cáncer pero su
interés por el arte nunca desapareció.
En junio de este año cogimos un autobús para ir a la
Galería Nacional del Retrato en Londres para ver el premio BP del 2008 y
le encanto visitar su vieja universidad de St. Martins en donde él hizo
MA. Aquí fue donde su viaje visual había comenzado. Él no había estado
en este edificio desde hacia 35 años. Terminamos celebrando el día con
una botella de cava para brindar por España.
Hace cinco años Scott y yo formamos un
grupo de “Clase en Vivo” en Competa. Una posibilidad para que los
artistas se reuniesen por el placer y la disciplina de expresar sus
vivencias. A petición suya continuaremos con este proyecto. En
septiembre el grupo se convocara otra vez con el nombre “ Clase en Vivo”
de Scott Lidgett.
Scott tenía un gran sentido visual de
la belleza. Él pudo transmitir esto en sus extraordinarias pinturas. Su
hogar estaba llena de objetos interesantes, que reflejan como espejos
la luz de su poesía profunda. Sus compañeros y sus hijos con su
intrínseca belleza. Él se va dejando a cuatro hijos, Holly, Arran,
Fenton y Noah. y su primer nieto que vera la luz en octubre. La esencia
de Scott seguirá viva en su familia mas allegada . Sus muchos amigos en
Competa notaran su ausencia por su ingenio, tolerancia y encanto
insustituible
