Chapter 1
"Arfer come
on boy. Time to go to work."
Arfer rolled out of a pile of straw
and made towards the hole in the barn wall. He'd
been awake for the last half-hour
contentedly watching the light of a new day creep into his
hideaway. He had seen the old owl silently return from his night out
and settle in the rafters at the far corner of the roof, and had
heard the scurry of the mice as they
rushed to make themselves scarce.
After a stretch he squeezed through the hole and
ran through the farmyard towards
the farmhouse where Bob Langley was leaning on the garden
gate watching Arfer come towards him.
"Hello young
feller! How are you this fine morning?"
Bob opened the gate and
moved into the yard to greet him. Arfer bounded up and fussed about
Bob's legs as he tousled his head and ears.
"It's a
grand morning Arfer. C'mon let's go and get the girls in."
They walked across the yard towards the far gate, which led towards
the western end of the farm and set off across the fields
which climbed up the gentle rise of the
valley. Bob opened the gates as
they went along and soon enough they came to the vast open
area of land known as Fortyhorse on which the cows grazed.
"Annabelle!
Daisy! Come on! Oy, oy, oy!"
The
cows looked up, and slowly began to move. They were spread
everywhere, and it was Arfer's job to round them up and head
them back to the farm where the
milking sheds stood.
"That's
right Arfer - gather them in, but not too quickly mind."
Arfer dashed away to the left and raced round in a large circle to
get behind the
