Debbie Wilkes

Debbie's romance with photography began as a teenager when this combined with her desire to travel led her to consider a career as a photo-journalist. Instead she embarked on a career in Information Technology and photography took a back seat until the mid 90's when, after buying her first Canon EOS camera, the spark was re-ignited.

Whilst still working in IT but contemplating a career change Debbie trained as a photographer at the prestigious The London College of Communication (formerly the London College of Printing), a constituent college of the University of the Arts London.  

After dabbling with digital Debbie finally switched completely when Nikon introduced their professional digital SLR the D2X and loved its versatility “The more you shoot the more you learn, and with digital it's instant learning on site.  No more waiting for pictures to be developed, by which time I've forgotten how I took them,  let alone what the camera settings were.”

Debbie does all her own printing “this allows me to squeeze out the best quality I possibly can and do justice to my subject. It's that finest detail that's the difference between a photograph and a snap”

Debbie moved to Cómpeta with her husband Andy in June 2005 and they immediately set to work converting the 3 roomed donkey bodega beneath their house into usable space.  Sugar and Spice was opened the following December and sells international foods, furniture and giftware. As well as being the ideal showcase for Debbie's photography. Debbie and Andy annually produce a calendar using locally taken pictures and provide bespoke design and printing services.

Since moving to Cómpeta Debbie has provided photographs for magazine articles, publicity brochures, websites, magazine advertising, commercial portraits & publicity for Cómpeta Town Hall.

Debbie romance con la fotografía empezó cuando era una adolescente, su deseo de viajar la condujo a considerar una carrera de  fotografía-periodística. En lugar de esto se embarcó  en una carrera de Tecnología Informática y la fotografía paso a segundo plano; en los años noventa cuando compra su primera camera fotográfica “ Canon EOS” la chispa se enciende de nuevo

Mientras estaba trabajando en Tecnología Informática pensó en un cambio de ocupación. Debbie estudio fotografía en  la prestigiosa universidad “London College of Printing” que es parte de la Universidad de las Artes..

Después de interesarse con digital por fin Debbie cambia completamente, cuando Nikon introdujo  su SLR digital profesional el D2X y le encantó su versatilidad. Cuantas más fotos haces más aprendes y con la cámara digital lo aprendes al instante. No tienes que esperar para revelar pues cuando llegas al proceso del revelado se te olvido como hiciste los ajustes de la cámara fotográfica las cámaras digitales hacen sus propios ajustes.

Debbie hace todo su propio printing “Esto me deja hilar muy fino para la mejor calidad que da  justicia al contenido de la foto”. Es el detalle mas mínimo el que da la diferencia entre una foto y una instantánea”

Debbie vino a vivir a Cómpeta con su marido Andy en Junio de 2005 e inmediatamente empezaron a trabajar reformando la bodega de 3 establos que hay debajo de su casa convirtiéndolo en un espacio útil. Sugar y Spice fue abierto en diciembre siguiente y vende comida internacional muebles y regalos además de ser un sitio ideal para la fotografía de Debbie. Cada año Debbie y Andy producen un calendario con fotos locales y ofrecen servicios de diseño e imprenta.

Después de mudarse a  Cómpeta Debbie ha proporcionado fotos para artículos de revistas, publicidad, folletos, paginas de web anuncios de revista, retratos comerciales y publicidad para el Ayuntamiento de  Cómpeta.
