| THE AXARQUIA CHORUS

The Axarquia Chorus began as a small group about three years ago, meeting in a home under the leadership of Martin Stanley who had recently moved to Salares from Brixham in Devon. We all loved singing and were delighted to find that there were others who did, too. Everyone brought different skills and experiences to the choir, ranging from those who loved to sing but couldn't read music to ex-choirboys, now singing at a somewhat lower pitch! Martin has a wealth of experience both as a musical director of choirs and as an accomplished pianist. In the early days, before Martin would call us "A Choir", we worked very hard under his tutelage to learn the art of choral singing. Gradually we improved enough to be "50% choir" and then eventually "A real Choir" and about two years ago Martin thought we were ready to give our first concert in Cómpeta Church. The reception was enthusiastic and encouraged us to continue. To date we have performed several times in Cómpeta Church, The Ayuntamiento Plaza for Semana Cultural 2006, The Museo Restaurant for the Rytmo De Cómpeta in 2006, the Tenencia de Alcalde in Algarrobo Costa in 2005 and 2006 and most recently in the Salon de Actos at the Ayuntamiento in Cómpeta in March 2007 and again in June 2007 We are multinational group and sing in several languages. We hope to attract some Spanish members but realise that it might be difficult because we rehearse in English. We are busy preparing lots of new songs for the autumn and will include some in Spanish. We rehearse every Tuesday from 3pm 'till 5pm in the Salon de Actos at the Ayuntamiento in Cómpeta and welcome new members. Come along to a rehearsal and see what you think! We sing in four parts, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. *Taken from The Grapevine May 2007
